LaQuentina “Nay Nay” was originally a NexStep Alliance student just before the pandemic in 2020. She took and passed three of her four tests during that time. She had failed her math test once, and before she could retake it, COVID hit Wichita, and the city went into shutdown.
Nay Nay did not return to classes immediately following the shutdown. During this period, she faced significant personal health challenges. She was diagnosed with breast cancer, a diagnosis that necessitated a comprehensive treatment plan. This difficult journey required her to take time off her studies to focus on her health and well-being.
Last August, Nay Nay celebrated becoming cancer-free and chose to continue her studies. She made a triumphant return to the classroom, her determination and resilience evident as she resumed her studies intending to finish her diploma.
In November 2023, her hard work and perseverance paid off when she successfully passed her math test and earned her high school diploma.
“As a mom, the flexible schedule was great. I used to work the first shift, and I liked how the instructors always helped. I celebrated that I got through all the tests. I did it, I passed!”
Nay Nay currently works in social services. She plans to further her education by taking online classes to complete her LPN in Nursing at WSU Tech.
