2024 Scholar of the Year: Carlos Diaz Cruz
Born and raised in Mexico, Carlos moved to the United States four years ago after meeting his wife. Leaving his home country wasn’t an easy decision—he had spent over 25 years working as a financial advisor and accountant, with his family nearby. However, he embraced the opportunity for a fresh start with his wife in the U.S.
Upon arriving in Wichita, Carlos immediately sought to improve his English skills. His wife discovered NexStep Alliance’s English as a Second Language (ESL) program online, which seemed to be the perfect fit for him.
Carlos proved to be an exemplary student with great attendance and a positive attitude throughout his classes. His hard work has paid off, especially in his English proficiency.
When he began with NexStep Alliance, his understanding of the language was minimal. Now, after completing Levels 5 and 6 in Reading and Listening, he has significantly expanded his vocabulary and comprehension throughout more than two and a half years.
This past summer, Carlos secured a job with Frito-Lay, stocking products at local Wichita grocery and big-box stores. Despite his new job, he continues attending evening classes to improve his English.
Carlos’s determination allows him to achieve anything he sets his mind to. Enhancing his English through NexStep has been a crucial part of his academic and personal success.
