Full Circle Learning: From Student to Educator

An exciting outcome of this launch is that a former ESL and KPC (Kansas Pathway to Career) student applied for the math instruction position, and was hired to teach the class. This reflects the full-circle impact of NexStep Alliance, a partnership with Goodwill Industries of Kansas and WSU Tech programs, where students return as leaders and educators in the same system that supported their growth.

Before joining NexStep Alliance, he worked for Nissan in Mexico for about 10 years as an engineer, where he managed approximately 200 employees and trained teams on product lines and instrumentation. His experience in both technical work and training others helped prepare him for teaching.

“I am always patient and teach step by step until students feel comfortable,” he shared. “I want them to know this is possible for anyone. Many students have a fear of learning math, but they can learn in a way that works for them.”

Reflecting on his teaching style, Anne Wyatt, Assistant Director of Education, shared, “His classroom is very collaborative and supportive. He has built a great atmosphere, especially in a subject like math that is harder for some students.”

For him, the program is about opportunity and hope.

“It brings opportunity for people to get better jobs. It gives hope to the people I teach,” he said. “I want students to face their fears and realize there are many opportunities in this world.”

In addition to teaching, he is also participating in the KPC Composite Fabrication program at WSU Tech, gaining hands-on experience in aerospace manufacturing.

“I am really grateful. It has been a challenge, but also very rewarding. There are a lot of opportunities in Wichita within aviation.”

Gerardo is grateful for the opportunity to help students gain tools for a new future and find more opportunities to grow professionally. Looking ahead, he hopes to continue growing in manufacturing while staying connected to education.
